Continued support from our Members GRDC and DPIRD to 2026

AEGIC is an initiative of Australian grain growers and the Australian Government through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), and the Western Australian Government through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).

In June 2022, GRDC and DPIRD announced $24 million total ongoing investment in AEGIC until 2026.

Additional investment
to support AEGIC projects

The WA Government allocated an additional $1 million in 2022-23 to invest in projects to benefit growers.

GRDC provided additional investment for several AEGIC projects.

Further investment was secured from the Australian Government under three programs:

  • Agricultural Trade and Market Access
    Cooperation Program;
  • Agricultural Innovation Hubs Program; and
  • Global Innovation Linkages Program Round 3.

The South Australian Grains Industry Trust and InterGrain are also supporting AEGIC projects.

This diversity of investment demonstrates the strong level of support AEGIC has across the industry.

Winner: Asian Engagement Excellence Award

Our efforts to maintain connections with international markets were recognised with the AIM WA Perdaman Asian Engagement Excellence Award in November 2021.

From AIM WA: “Employing technical advances such as virtual crop inspections, targeted webinars and information portals, AEGIC received ongoing positive feedback from stakeholders and industry leaders.”

AEGIC has strong support from stakeholders across the industry, who recognise the value we deliver.

AEGIC… is very much recognised, not just in WA but nationally, as a delivery agent effectively, as a service provider nationally…you continue to deliver to growers.

3200 registrations for 59 virtual events across 16 countries

We delivered 59 webinars and meetings across 16 countries with 3200 registrations in total.

TOPICS: Australian malting barley for brewing (China, India, the Americas, South Africa, Ethiopia); Australian feed grains (Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, China); Australian wheat, oats and whole grains (Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand, Taiwan).

AEGIC acknowledges the support of the Australian Government’s Agricultural Trade and Market Access Cooperation (ATMAC) program for some of these events.

126 virtual crop inspection videos provided to more than 3400 international contacts across 14 countries

We released monthly virtual crop inspection videos in six languages across 14 countries to more than 3400 international contacts to help customers keep track of the Australian growing season.

Customer connection is significantly enhanced via our in-language, in-culture online delivery to the customer’s lab and workstation.

This is a collaboration between growers and the Australian grains industry (Australian Crop Breeders, ADM, CBH Group, CHS Broadbent, GIWA, GrainCorp, GrainGrowers, Viterra, GIMAF, GPA, Grain Producers SA and GTA).

Grist for the mill: helping flour millers optimise the value of Australian wheat

We provided flour mills with practical, technical information demonstrating that high quality Australian wheat can result in significant cost savings over lower quality wheat – even though Australian wheat might be more expensive per tonne.

We are investigating optimal milling conditions for key Australian wheat types to help millers get the most value out of Australian wheat.

Ensuring customers are well serviced and have a positive experience builds trust and makes it more likely they will purchase Australian grain.

Thank you for your good work of distributing Crop Update Video throughout the 2021 season… I am very pleased to share the joy of this year’s harvest with you and Australian growers.

Japanese shochu maker

I find these crop inspection videos are extremely helpful… they are especially helpful to our commercial people… in turn, they provide the videos to key support people in East Asia, where the foreign language versions are particularly pertinent. In short: Magnificent!

Evidence: Australian wheat enhances premium Chinese noodles

Chinese millers and noodle makers told us they are interested in Australia’s higher-quality wheat grades for premium products

Responding to this feedback, AEGIC researched the impact of Australian wheat on the quality of Chinese noodles, dumpling skins, steamed buns, and toast breads, with investment from InterGrain.

Results showed that blending high-quality Australian wheat with standard Chinese wheat significantly improved product appearance and sensory quality.

The results will help pave the way for higher-priced Australian wheat classes to be used in China.

The advantages of Australian wheat: technical support for noodle customers

Our webinars and virtual meetings in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines help flour millers and food manufacturers understand the benefits of Australian wheat for noodles.

Potential new uses for Australian Noodle Wheat

Australian Noodles Wheat (ANW), originally bred for Japanese-style udon noodles, could have potential for other noodles styles and baked products in South East Asia.

In this new co-investment with InterGrain, AEGIC is working with Asian flour mills and food manufacturers to stimulate and gauge interest in ANW for premium products.

We produced a high-quality video to introduce the project to international customers and stimulate interest.

Finding new niches for and demonstrating the superiority of Australian wheat for noodles makes it more likely customers will choose Australian wheat.

Thank you for your email and sharing with us about ANW…am looping in our R&D Flour Head so that we can collaborate with you (AEGIC) for us to further explore how to maximize and/or utilize such wheat in our flour products.

Flour miller (Philippines)

Thank you so much for your sharing. Now our company is researching some new product… (Korean style noodles). I think & believe Australian wheat is a best choice for these products.

Capturing a bigger share of the Asian bread market through technical support

We produced a series of instructional baking videos to help companies assess dough rheology and bread quality in their own labs.

We provided technical webinars to flour millers and bread makers in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines to help them understand how to use Australian wheat for bread.

Australian wheat is often not preferred in Asian markets for bread products, with North American wheat usually dominating. AEGIC’s long-term program of technical support for customers makes it more likely Australian wheat will capture more of the Asian bread market in the future.

Finding new markets for the Australian soft wheat industry for cookies and cakes in the long-term

AEGIC is working to support a potential new Australian soft wheat industry, in collaboration with growers, breeders and other industry stakeholders.

Australian breeding companies are responding to this new opportunity by significantly increasing investment into soft wheat breeding programs in WA.

AEGIC is supporting breeding trials by assessing cookie quality, and demonstrating a range of technical tests in Solvent Retention Capacity and flour milling performance, with promising results.

Collaborators: WA Soft Wheat Growers Association (WASWGA), Australian Grain Technologies, InterGrain and LongReach.

Seasonal opportunity: Asian cookie makers look to Australian Noodle Wheat

After drought devastated US soft wheat production, we provided flour millers in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines with practical information on a short-term solution: low protein Australian Noodle Wheat.

Demonstrating the performance and value of Australian wheat for bread and cookies helps position Australia as a preferred supplier to Asian markets, creating value for growers.

Many thanks for sharing us the three videos. For sure it is very helpful for us… so it could improve our staff knowledge in assessing bread and dough quality.

products in Asia

We produced a practical guide as a reference for food manufacturers on how to use Australian wheat for whole grain products.

We are expanding our whole grain research in other products which include coconut and pandan waffles, cookies, youtiao, and dried noodles.

Moving oats beyond breakfast: innovative
new products

We began the process of finding a commercial partner to take our 100% whole grain oat noodles and oat rice products to market.

New innovative oat products under development include bubble tea pearls, oat “couscous” and sauces.

AEGIC webinars for Asian markets on the benefits of Australian oats resulted in good feedback and interest.

Pulse protein food innovation

We are building on previous research to facilitate the development of domestic pulse protein processing operations.

Optimised processing methods for producing protein concentrates from major Australian pulses will support new product development, which increases demand for Australian pulses in the midst of a significant global plant-based food trend.

Demonstrating that Australian white wheat is the best choice for whole grain products creates new value for growers.

Developing new innovative oat and pulse products and processes drives market growth and increases the value of Australian grains.

This is a very meaningful seminar to… have a deep understanding of the supply, quality and importance of wheat breeding in Australia to the whole grain diet.

Thanks for organising such a great webinar sharing information related to oat breeding and healthy food applications, these have given me a great deal of inspirations.

webinars

Since 2020 we have actively engaged with alternative malting barley markets including India and Vietnam to stimulate demand and diversify market options for growers.

We have now greatly expanded this webinar program to include Mexico, Columbia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, South Africa and Ethiopia.

We also continue to engage with Chinese maltsters and brewers to keep them informed and connected in case the market opens again in the future.

Innovative new
malting technology

We have developed a new technology which will greatly speed up the process for testing malting protocols for new barley varieties.

Early intelligence on the best malting conditions will help customers adopt new varieties rapidly. This makes it more likely they will continue to buy malting barley from Australia.

Diversifying markets for Australian malting barley helps reduce reliance on a single large market.

Maintaining engagement with China makes it more likely buyers will return to purchasing Australian barley if the market reopens in the future.

Feedback from people in target markets has been very positive and constructive towards the building of relationships and knowledge about Australia’s barley industry through (AEGIC’s malting barley) webinar program… Importantly, the effort is leading to trade outcomes.

Working with leading Australian animal feed nutrition experts, we hosted webinars for the livestock industries of Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, China and Mexico.

Providing practical advice on how to maximise the value of Australian barley, wheat and sorghum for feeding swine, poultry and cattle positions Australian grains as a top choice.

Sprouted wheat for
animal feed:
short

Responding quickly to a wet 2021 harvest in some areas which resulted in sprouted crops, we developed and distributed technical information on how to use sprouted wheat for animal feed.

Finding customers for downgraded wheat helps preserve some value for growers.

We help feed grain buyers understand the benefits of using Australian grains and how to incorporate them in livestock rations, supporting the demand for Australian feed grains.

Here we were with this China issue with barley, AEGIC were already in market with barley on feed markets, and actually increasing the appetite and the understanding in South East Asian markets, so that our marketers were then very well equipped to go in there… let’s just say if it wasn’t for AEGIC, there’s no way the acceleration and uptake into that market would have happened (that quickly).

Analysis: Improving Australia’s containerised grain exports

Together with GRDC and the South Australian Grains Industry Trust, we investigated Australia’s container grain trade.

We produced a series of case study videos highlighting businesses involved in the container grain trade.

A major report, Improving Australia’s containerised grain exports, analysed the importance of the containerised grain trade compared with bulk grain shipping. The report was developed in 2021-22 with a final public release in August.

The report found exporting grain in shipping containers will continue to play a significant role in Australia despite global COVID impacts.

Consumer focus:
analysis starts with
happy consumers

AEGIC sees the grains value chain starting with happy consumers. Consumer needs and wants flow across the value chain through processors, the supply chain, growers and breeders.

We are investigating consumer behaviour in key grain markets to identify trends and opportunities for the Australian grains industry to capitalise on.

We shared in-depth analysis into Indonesia’s consumption of high-value grain products with key stakeholders.

We are analysing demand for food products in key markets that make convenient, healthy, ethical, sustainable and safe claims on their labels.
